Though they came from very different musical worlds, Michael MacKinnon and Shante van Horlick found harmony through opera when they met in Vancouver in 2018 during a production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Their connection began in the costume shop and was sealed on stage as Don Alfonso and Dorabella. Today, they share both life and music on Vancouver Island.

Both graduates of UBC’s School of Music, Michael holds a BMUS in Voice and Shante a BMUS in Opera. Their musical journeys, however, began in very different places. Scottish-born Michael started out as a drummer in rock’n’roll pub bands before discovering his love of singing and finding his way into opera. He went on to build an international career performing with companies in Canada and Europe. Shante’s musical path was rooted in classical training from childhood, leading to performances across Canada, the USA, and Europe.

Their repertoire and performance experience extend well beyond opera, encompassing classical song, rock, folk, musical theatre, and more. Over the years, they have shared their music in hundreds of performances and in settings ranging from concert halls and theatres to house concerts, weddings, funerals, parties, churches, and community events.

Since moving to Vancouver Island in 2020, both have embraced new careers—Michael as a teacher and Shante as a counsellor—while continuing to perform individually and together with choirs, ensembles, and musical organizations throughout the Island. When they’re not on stage, they love exploring the beautiful landscapes of Vancouver Island with their beloved black Lab, Xena.

For Michael and Shante, music is ultimately about connection. They love bringing their diverse musical backgrounds together to create engaging, heartfelt programs filled with storytelling, warmth, and a sense of shared experience. Whether performing for a large audience or an intimate gathering, their greatest joy is sharing songs that warm the heart, lift the spirit, and remind us of life’s beauty.
